The Indiana Attorney General's Office has reportedly requested the Indiana Supreme Court to issue an execution date for a Spencer County man who was sentenced to death in 2007 for the rape and murder of 15-year-old Stacy Payne in 2001.
Roy Lee Ward pretended he was looking for a lost dog and convinced Payne to let him into her Spencer County home July 11, 2001. Payne's younger sister was the only other person home. She saw a man holding down Stacy, called 911 and hid in a closet.
State records show Ward hit Stacy with a five-pound weight and sliced her with a knife. The Town Marshal found Ward at the house, covered in blood and holding a knife.
Ward was sentenced to death, but the case was overturned.
After a second trial, Ward again received the death penalty.
