Being an evidence-based dermatologist makes me a Sherlock Holmes of sorts because I’m always investigating the science (or lack thereof) of some bright and shiny skin care product or device that the internet is buzzing on.
All that glitters is not gold, but many times the branding, marketing, and packaging of a skin care item actually distract from the fact that there is no medical evidence to back its claims. I’ll also take this chance to say -- tried and tested remains better than shiny and new.
I consider it my duty as a dermatologist to filter through the skin care hype and help the public spend their hard-earned money on products that actually deliver on their promise. That being said, skin care is not just about what it actually does on your skin, but also what it makes you feel. If there is something I am not a fan of but YOU are – as long as it is NOT harmful and you feel the amount you spent on the product is worth it because of the benefits you perceive - have at it. I am here to recommend, never to impose.
My thought process in recommending a skin care product, device or supplement:
1. Is it safe?
2. Does it make sense -- is there a scientific plausibility?
3. Is there evidence to support that it does what it claims to do?
4. Is it cost-effective? Is there something out there that can do what this product claims to do, but at a lower price?
I will be talking about the following skin care items:
1. Sunscreen
2. Cocoa butter for stretch marks
3. Sheet masks
4. Lucas papaw
5. Toners and Micellar water
6. Jade rollers
7. Cleansing devices
8. Collagen supplements for anti-aging
