Navajo Reservoir in northern New Mexico (also known as Navajo Lake) offers is an extremely diverse fishery offering many cool fly fishing opportunities. Navajo Reservoir is contrasted against the world-renowned trout fishery of San Juan River Quality Waters that flow out of Navajo Dam that creates the reservoir. Unlike the trout fishery where small flies and light tippet are required to fool finicky fish, bigger predators hunt these waters.
With a healthy population of large pike, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, carp, and crappie; the adventurous fly angler has the opportunity to tangle with hard fighting fish on tackle often reserved for saltwater fishing. With spring pike that slam large streamers, bass on topwater, and summer dry fly fishing for cruising pods of carp; this is truly a unique fishery that has to be experienced to be believed.
