Thai Micro Crabs - Part 1 - Mating, Hatching, Rearing the Larvae and more

Oop. I did forget one thing.

I believe the treat I prepared the adults is what prompted them to the mating I caught in that video.

RECIPE:

Equal mix of fresh baked acorn squash, fresh blanched zucchini, and Aquatic Foods Betta Pellets (pro formula) ground up and mashed together into a messy ball. Yes, it makes a mess in the aquarium, so I don’t do it often. And I vacuum up the remnants after two or three hours.

I plopped four of these gooey blobs into the tank in the evening hours, well before lights out. So this is not typically active time for the crabs as they are nocturnal.

The shrimp attacked the offerings first. But then the crabs started to come out of the driftwood fairly quickly thereafter.

The two you see in the mating portion of the video are for about five minutes before the female wandered off and the male began stalking, then pounced on her (and I thought I better record whatever the heck was happening). So I am pretty sure this treat recipe acted like some sort of… prompt gor that behavior for them? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Best way I can think to describe it (and still keep things PG).

I have had so many hatches since then that I have had no need to repeat this to test my theory. But perhaps some of you with these crabs can give it a go.
