During the Cold War, the US Navy needed an aircraft specially designed to hunt Soviet submarines. So they built the Grumman S-2 Tracker, the world’s first dedicated, carrier-based anti-submarine aircraft. It featured high-tech magnetic sensors to detect the minute distortions in the Earth's magnetic field caused by a submerged sub. Packed into one single airframe, it carried sonar buoys, depth charges, missiles, and torpedoes.
