At least 20 people have died after a landslide struck a remote area in northeastern India early Wednesday morning, according to reports by local media.

The landslide hit West Bengal’s Darjeeling district and has leveled homes, blocked roads and stopped the Darjeeling Himalayan train service from running.

Excavators are working to clear debris that is blocking roads connecting Darjeeling to other parts of Bengal and making it difficult for rescue operations to gain access to the remote area.

Reports suggest that the death toll is likely increase as the search for survivors continues.
