macOS Mojave first look: Minor but welcome additions
Three weeks ago, at this time, Engadget was in the middle of a marathon liveblog. Apple was starting its annual WWDC developer conference and, as usual, had news to share about each of its main platforms. Although iOS was the clear star of the show, dominating more than half of the two-hour conference, macOS achieved a solid second place, with about half an hour of lip service. Some observers dismissed it as a relatively boring day of Apple news. I say that most of the adjustments are useful, if not delayed in some cases.
The newest version of macOS, called Mojave, comes today as a public beta, with the release of the final software sometime this fall, but I've been testing it since last week. As always, to take full advantage of the operating system, you should also be in the latest version of iOS. That should also be in beta at any time, with a full release this fall. Read on to get a preview of Mojave, and soon we will follow up with the first impressions of iOS 12.
Compatibility and stability
To install Mojave, you will need one of the following: a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac or Mac Mini 2012 or later; a 12-inch MacBook from 2015; a Mac Pro 2013 or later; or a new iMac Pro. Needless to say, but all the usual warnings apply: first back up your iCloud and keep your mind open.
Although Apple has a solid track record with regards to the release of stable beta versions, I experienced the occasional crash of the application or the hung pinwheel. I also felt frustrated when I discovered that, in Safari, I was waking up my machine to discover that I had logged out on Facebook and Twitter, although I had previously ordered these services to remember that browser.
