I present results from clinical trials testing different GLP-1 type drugs that have been developed to treat diabetes in patients with Parkinson's disease. Two of these (Bydureon, Adlyxin) show good effects and stop disease progression. A third drug that does not enter the brain did not show any effect.
These results tell us that GLP-1 type drugs actually can show good effects in people with Parkinson's disease! However, those drugs are not on the market any longer. We need new drugs that can enter the brain better to treat Parkinson's. Current GLP-1 type drugs do not enter the brain very well, they are designed to stay in the blood to treat diabetes.
