Expected announcement on the high frequency train

The federal government is preparing to announce a new high-frequency rail corridor on Tuesday to improve links between some of the major cities in Ontario and Quebec.

Federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra said in a video posted to social media Monday that the government would initiate the procurement process to build a route connecting Quebec to Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.

The new trains that will use the corridor between these cities are expected to reach speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour.

A more official announcement will take place on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Québec station, in the company of the President of the Treasury Board, Jean-Yves Duclos, and the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne.

Parliamentary Secretary Joël Lightbound and the mayor of Quebec, Régis Labeaume, will also be present.

Minister Alghabra is due to hold another press conference Tuesday afternoon in Trois-Rivières, Mauricie.

Former Transport Minister Marc Garneau previously announced a commitment of more than $ 71 million from the federal government in 2019 for the high-frequency train project.

Via Rail says the project aims to separate passenger and freight rail operations and increase passenger and freight capacity.
