Once criticized as ‘a scheme of madness’ the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme was completed in 1903 and extends from Mundaring Weir to Kalgoorlie, the city built on gold, 560 kilometres away.
Since completion this 'scheme of madness' is celebrated as one of the world's greatest engineering projects.
To this day water is supplied from Mundaring Weir to the Goldfields and Agricultural region
Capacity – 63.6 billion litres
Catchment area – 1,470km2
Dam wall length – 308m
Dam wall height (above riverbed) – 42m
Number 1 pump station is now managed by the National Trust and has been turned into a museum. It was closed when we visited on 19th July due to the current COVID-19 outbreak.
