Sostegni in bronzo a forma di Gorgone - Bronze supports in the shape of a Gorgon from Chiusi (6th century BC)
Bronze supports in the shape of a Gorgon, cast in openwork relief, probably brazier feet
A Gorgon was a grotesque female monster from ancient mythology. Her hair frames the upper part of the face in a roll, the tresses extending to either side resting on her outstretched arms and open palms in shallow, stylised waves, incised with long, parallel wavy lines and rows of small vertical cuts. The face is the most detailed aspect of the bronze with large ears, rounded cheeks, a mouth gaping open with upturned corners and a lolling tongue, but still has a mask-like quality. Her asymmetric eyes are sharply defined with prominent eyebrows arching above them. She wears a chiton with sleeves ending at the elbow. The body is simple and somewhat asymmetric, with breasts of unequal size. The upper body merges into a calyx or husk-like shape, with two hooked protrusions peeling off at each side, and terminating in a single, large four-clawed foot. The concave reverse shows an unfinished, irregular surface.
