"I'm afraid" is a very useful phrase which is particulary common in British English, as we like to be more indirect when speaking about bad news.
"I'm afraid so"and "I'm afraid not" are especially handy expressions to know because (and this may not be the most advanced vocabulary lesson I've ever given) they are extremely common in spoken English and I notice that English learners don't use them as much as they could.
