Then came Michèle Mouton, the fearless French driver who rewrote rally history. In 1981 she stunned the world by winning in Sanremo, becoming the first woman to win a WRC event. Through the mid-1980s, Audi fought unforgettable battles with the best of Group B. Lancia’s 037 represented the last stand of rear-wheel drive, agile and lightweight but powerless in snow and mud.
