An emotional day in Polk County court as Cheryl Williams was sentenced to life in prison for her role in the death of 21-year-old Deputy Blane Lane. Lane, a young father and dedicated deputy, was killed by friendly fire during an attempted arrest of Williams in 2022. A jury found her guilty of second-degree felony murder after she resisted arrest, leading to the fatal incident.
During sentencing, Lane’s family and fellow officers remembered him as a protector, dreamer, and future leader. His grieving mother directly addressed Williams in court, calling her a “monster” and saying she prays her son’s face haunts her each night.
Williams did not speak at the hearing but pleaded guilty to the underlying drug charges that led to the arrest attempt. State Attorney Brian Haas said prosecuting that part of the case was essential, as it ultimately cost a young deputy his life.
