Japan Travel: Isuien Garden attractive Japanese garden ponds & teahouses, Nara15
Isuien is an beautiful Japanese garden with many features, including its "borrowed scenery" by using Todaiji Temple's Nandaimon Gate and Mount Wakakusayama as part of the garden landscape. Isuien means "garden founded on water", and the garden's name comes from the fact that its ponds are fed by the small nearby Yoshikigawa River. The Yoshikien Garden is located just accross from the river.
Isuien comprised of two parts, a front garden and a rear garden, where there are a number of tea houses scattered throughout. The front garden has a longer history, founded in the mid 17th century. The larger of the two is the rear garden, and is more recently built in 1899 by a wealthy merchant. Next to the garden is a museum that displays a personal collection of pottery, seals, mirrors and other artifacts from ancient China and Korea, which is included with admission.
