Monteliusvägen is a promenade north of the buildings at Mariaberget's heights on Södermalm in Stockholm, inaugurated in 1998. It offers a sweeping view of Riddarfjärden.
Monteliusvägen is named after Professor Oscar Montelius. He was an archaeologist and historian and became a member of the Swedish Academy in 1917. He was born and died in the Montelius House named after him at S: t Paulsgatan no. 11 on Södermalm.
Monteliusvägen runs over parkland set aside for the purpose in a detailed plan that came into force on 19 December 1977. [1] The detailed plan applies to the entire Mariaberget and was drawn up after the City of Stockholm decided to preserve Mariaberget's historic buildings (see Söder 67).
The 416 meter long promenade runs on the slope high above Söder Mälarstrand. The road starts at Kattgränd and Öbergska gården in the west, where stairs connect to Torkel Knutssonsgatan and Bastugatan respectively. The path ends in the east at Bastugatan no. 16 at the height of the Cederborg villa. Along the road there are several terraces and park benches, some with fixed tables, from where you have a grandiose view of Riddarfjärden, southern Kungsholmen, Riddarholmen and the Old Town.
From Monteliusvägen there are entrances to Ivar Los park and Olle Adolphsons park as well as a stair connection to Timmermansgatan. The road passes over a foundation from a windmill (probably Stora Pryssan). Parts of the millstones can be seen blasted into nearby retaining walls. Some of the small terraces the road crosses are remnants of plots where tobacco was once grown. Among the preserved buildings is Rangströmska gården, where the composer Ture Rangström lived and worked from 1908 until his death in 1947. The house is recognizable on the characteristic glass veranda with one of Stockholm's best views of Riddarfjärden.
In front of the facility, there were protests against the construction. A general argument against the lane was that the construction with long longitudinal black-painted wooden fences changed Mariaberget's profile too much. More specifically, several of the residents on the north side of Bastugatan, who in many cases were able to use the common as a secluded garden, protested against the fact that the street came to encroach on privacy. Among others, Ingemar Unge was a very active opponent of the construction. Attempts with name collections were not successful, however, as the residents in the area who did not live in the immediate vicinity of the proposed route rather had better access to Mariaberget and the view from there. [2]
20 years later, the road began to be built after consultation and redesign. The new proposal with road construction outside the retaining walls was developed by landscape architect S-O Hagman on behalf of the Street and Real Estate Office. Project leader was Frank Lange, landscape architect and consultant in park facilities. NCC carried out construction work. All material and mass handling was handled with cranes from Södra Mälarstrand. The road was inaugurated in August 1998. The road cost fourteen million kroner to build, which was double what was budgeted from the beginning (for the old drawing proposal) but then the Street and Real Estate Office took the opportunity to restore all retaining walls along Mariaberget which were in poor condition. The road and railings were dimensioned to withstand a high crowd pressure that can be tens of thousands of visitors at possible events
