Dr. Mrunal Patel, UPSC Educator and Economy Subject Expert, explains Land Ports and why the Land Ports Authority of India is in the news for 2026. A Land Port works like a sea port or airport, but for road and rail border crossings, such as the Attari border. When goods, vehicles and people cross, several ministries are involved across visa, customs and vehicle registration. To coordinate these, the Land Ports Authority of India was created through a 2010 law as a statutory body, reporting to the Home Ministry under Amit Shah. India shares about 15000 kilometres of land border with Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar. Around 15 land ports are operational, and 70 new ones are planned, mostly toward China and Pakistan, with a new coordination portal also launched. The lecture also covers a Prelims practice question: Uttar Pradesh shares borders with the maximum states, West Bengal and not Rajasthan has the longest international border due to its shape, and both Sikkim and Meghalaya border only one country each.
