The possibility of a Grand Opposition Alliance is gaining momentum as key contacts have taken place between Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Aain Pakistan and Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Discussions reportedly covered political strategy, madrassa affairs, alleged election rigging, foreign policy, and the Afghanistan situation. Maulana publicly supported Mahmood Khan Achakzai’s stance on negotiations with the government and emphasized moving forward on common points to build a united opposition front.
In a fiery speech in the National Assembly, Maulana Fazlur Rehman openly challenged recent constitutional amendments, declaring he would defy them publicly. He strongly criticized Pakistan’s alignment with what he called Trump’s “Board of Peace,” warned of Israel’s regional military expansion reaching Iran and potentially Pakistan’s borders, and rejected what he termed political submission by the ruling leadership. He stressed that sovereignty, not appeasement, must guide national policy.
Meanwhile, former Railways Minister Ahsan Iqbal responded by questioning whether Pakistan should isolate itself globally, arguing that diplomatic engagement is essential, particularly regarding Palestine. This debate has raised critical questions: Will a grand opposition alliance emerge? Will a nationwide movement begin? Can all political forces unite on Palestine and Israel? And how decisive will Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s role be, given his past leadership of the PDM alliance?
A major development resurfaced with former Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaqat Ali Chatha, who reappeared after months of absence following his shocking February 2024 confession. He had publicly admitted large-scale rigging in the 2024 general elections, claiming losing candidates were given fake leads of 50,000 to 70,000 votes. His recent appearance, visibly frail, has reignited debate over electoral credibility.
Political tensions escalated within PTI, as party leaders Iqbal Afridi and Khurram Shahzad physically clashed outside the National Assembly. Afridi accused party members of acting as “touts,” while journalists were also confronted. This comes days after Afridi was forcibly stopped from speaking on the Tirah operation inside parliament.
The arrest of lawyer Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Chattha triggered widespread outrage. Both were detained violently near Serena Chowk under a year-old terrorism case that had never been disclosed to them. Islamabad High Court and District Bar Associations announced a complete court strike. A judge later rejected physical remand and sent both lawyers on 14-day judicial remand, intensifying concerns over rule of law and police conduct.
