Welcome back everyone to Episode 55 of The Career Woman’s Secret Playbook Podcast – I am your host Dr. Dawn and whether you are brand new to our podcast OR whether you are a loyal listener, I am so glad you are here today because this often-overlooked topic can REALLY make a difference in both your professional and personal life.
Whether it's a disorganized desk, a messy kitchen counter, or a cluttered digital space, clutter can silently sabotage your productivity, focus, and even your mental well-being. SO, let’s break down how clutter affects you and, more importantly, talk about what we can do about it to take back control of your environment—and your mind.
1. The Hidden Ways Clutter Impacts You:
• At Home:
Clutter in your living space can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and a sense of overwhelm. It becomes harder to relax or enjoy downtime when your surroundings are chaotic. Research shows that clutter can drain your mental energy and reduce your ability to focus on important tasks.
• At Work:
A cluttered workspace negatively affects productivity. It’s harder to find essential documents, you’re more likely to be distracted, and your creativity may feel stifled. Clutter in the professional realm can also leave a bad impression on clients and colleagues, reflecting poorly on your organizational skills.
2. So HERE’s What We Can Do About It: So, let me share 5 of my favorite tips to tackle clutter once and for all:
• 1) Declutter in Small Steps:
Start with one area—whether it’s a drawer, your inbox, or your car. Decluttering doesn't have to happen all at once. Begin small to avoid feeling overwhelmed and build momentum from there.
• 2) Use My Decluttering Challenge Tool:
(insert picture on screen) Since the goal is to declutter in small steps, tackling one challenge a day over the next 30 days is an easy way NOT to get overwhelmed while having fun in the process.
• 3) Adopt the "One-In, One-Out" Rule:
To keep clutter at bay, for every new item you bring into your home or office, remove one that you no longer need. This method helps prevent clutter from creeping back in.
• 4) Create Organizational Systems:
Develop a system that works for you. Whether it’s color-coding files, organizing tasks in digital folders, or setting up a decluttering routine every Sunday, systems reduce the need to think about organization.
• 5) Digital Decluttering:
Unsubscribe from emails, delete unused apps, and organize your digital files to reduce information overload. A clear digital space is just as important as a clear physical one.

Clutter might seem harmless, but its impact on your mindset and productivity is real. By taking small, actionable steps to clear your space, you can reduce stress, increase focus, and set the stage for greater success both at home and in your career.
