The Vista House sits at the tip of Crown Point in the majestic Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. The construction was privately funded and took place in 1916-17, with a dedication ceremony on May 5, 1918.
The construction was originally scheduled to cost $17,000, but ultimately cost $100,000. Upgrades to building materials, the location difficulties and labor all combined to blow the original estimate out of the water!!
Run as a rest area by the county, the ongoing maintenance costs associated with such a hostile environment lead to the site being handed to the state in 1937 and it is now a beloved jewel of the state park system, visited by 100’s of thousands each year.
