Hand Dug Well Part 1

Описание: This is the first chronicle of my attempt to hand did a small irrigation well on my place here in Montana. I am using a 6" auger post hole digger available at most hardware stores. The cost of having it dug is about $2100 so this is in part an attempt to save money and part because I love to see if I can do stuff like this on my own. I am not encouraging you to undertake such a project but if you are I hope my experiences might provide you some insight. The difficult conditions of my soil might not translate to yours. If your water is within 20 feet of the surface I see no reason this could not be accomplished as a project of your own. Know your own laws and limitations. Having looked at and experimented with a sand-point I think this is better. Larger casing means more water to draw from and so far I have been able to get through soil that would have crushed the sand-point anyway.

NOTE: In the end I used a sandpoint by driving it down my casing. Having pre dug the hole made that process much easier AND more importantly I have easy access to the top of the well should I need to get back into it.
