As a physician who took a later turn into cancer research, he has taken special interest in increasing the ranks of physician-scientists and, in partnership with his late mentor David M. Livingston, MD, led the creation of the Damon Runyon Physician-Scientist Training Award program. In this talk, he reflects on his early days as an unproven scientist, the path that led to his passion for mentoring, and – of course – how he just happened to win a Nobel Prize along the way.
