Auto Industry Hits Trump's Proposed Car Tariffs

Описание: (19 Jul 2018) Automakers, dealers and suppliers are united in opposition to President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on imported cars, trucks and auto parts.  
Opponents who work in the industry joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers outside the U.S. Capitol Thursday to voice their concerns.
"A 25 percent tariff on imported autos and auto parts would only lead to fewer sales which leads to fewer American jobs. We can not let that happen," said Jennifer Adair, a quality team leader at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana.
"I agree with President Trump that we need to ensure a level playing field with America's trading partners," said Rep. Jackie Walorski, a Republican lawmaker from the Hoosier State.
"But imposing costly tariffs on this vital industry does threaten our nation's economic growth and puts manufacturing jobs at risk," she said.
The European Union says it is already preparing measures to retaliate against the United States if President Donald Trump puts tariffs on imported cars and auto parts.
Imposing a 25 percent tariff on auto imports would raise the price of the typical new car sold in the United States (now about $35,000) by $4,400 - $2,270 for U.S.-built cars and $6,875 for imported cars and trucks, according to a study released Thursday by the Center for Automotive Research.
"At the end of the day, tariffs are taxes, and what the administration is trying to do today is to impose new taxes on the American people," said Alabama Democratic Sen. Doug Jones.
"And once you start raising taxes, and the prices of these automobiles and things start going up, the demand goes down and it's going to put all of these workers at risk," Jones said.
