The Peneda-Gerês National Park hides spectacular waterfalls, magical and beautiful corners.
Among the mountains, viewpoints, villages and history, the waterfalls of Gerês are one of its main attractions. It is in the north of Portugal, bordering Spain, that you will find the magnificent Peneda-Gerês National Park, a paradise for nature lovers. The National Park can be visited throughout the year, but due to the seasonal characteristics of the waterfalls and river flows, we recommend that you visit them between spring and summer, when the water temperature is more pleasant. Some of the waterfalls in Gerês are difficult to access, so be sure to bring appropriate shoes to avoid accidents.
Suggestions viewpoints/Miradouro's:
-Miradouro da Pedra Bela: Perhaps the most popular viewpoint in Gerês, and rightfully so the view of the Cávado river and the surrounding mountains is breathtaking. Moreover, it is easily accessible.
How to get there: you can take the car right to the viewpoint, but it’s not easy to park up there. Leave the car 100 / 200m away from the viewpoint and do the rest on foot.
-Miradouro da Fraga Negra: This viewpoint provides a pleasant view over the reservoir of the Caniçada dam to the south, and the Gerês river valley to the north. It is not as impressive as the other viewpoints on this list but it is so nearby that it would be a pity to miss it.
How to get there: it’s not possible to take the car to the viewpoint. When you see you can’t go further, park and walk the rest (10 minutes, in total).
Waterfalls suitable for swimming:
-Cascata do Arado: This waterfall is one of the largest and most recognizable waterfalls in the Peneda Gerês National Park, and is situated in a location with excellent car access, making it one of the most visited.
How to get there: park next to the Miradouro das Rocas and take the dirt road until the bridge over the Arado river. From there, climb to the Arado waterfall’s viewpoint and amaze yourself to the fall of the waters. The steps are, sometimes, high and irregular, so it’s not an advisable walk for elderly or for those with limited mobility.
-Cascata portela do homem: It is located near the Spanish border, almost at the end of the road from Gerês. However, you have to walk to get there. Park at the border and walk 800 metres to the bridge from where you can see it. The Waterfall is located inside Mata da Albergaria, access costs 1,50€ / car. There’s a bridge above the waterfall but you can’t park there (the fine is 250€).
