Blastoise is MEDIOCRE? Is Blastoise Meh?? How Good was Blastoise in popular competitive Pokemon formats over the course of 6 generations? Find out how well Blastoise did with False Swipe Gaming!
FULL DISCLAIMERS:
I do not in any way shape or form hate Blastoise nor do I think he is less cooler than the other two. Venusaur is my favorite of the starters and I don’t really like Charizard that much in terms of design or “coolness” or whatever. In fact I think Blastoise has the best design of the three #armcannons and if it wasn’t for child hood memories of picking the green starter because my favorite color was green, I would say Blastoise is my favorite of the three starters. However, what this video is about is how Blastoise did throughout POPULAR competitive formats over the years. So I am going to be evaluating Blastoise based on research of various competitive websites and videos.
DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time and I just simply think its interesting to talk about a Pokemon in that way. I will cover Nintendo Cup for Gen 1 and 2, and Smogon for Gen 3-6 for singles. However, since my main source on Nintendo cup rules doesnt seem to have a blastoise page for Gens 1 and 2, I will be theorycrafting gens 1 and 2 and supplement my theory with the Smogon analysis since Smogon singles for gens 1 and 2 are similar to Nintendo cup with the exception of it being 3 vs 3 instead of 6 vs 6 and evasion and OHKO moves are allowed. I will also be covering VGC for Gen 6 doubles and I will say right now I am not covering Blastoise for Doubles Gen 3 or VGC Gens 4 and 5 because there is simply no information on him during these times in doubles. For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.
