Today's road tour takes us along a rural route in Aberdeenshire, linking the community of New Deer to Fraserburgh and surrounding areas. The A981 is one of two roads that terminate at New Deer, along with the A948 - both of which have been cut short from their original routes with the A981 continuing to Inverurie and the A948 originally starting near Turriff. The remaining sections have been downgraded to B-roads.
The A981 is a quiet, relatively straight route aside from a short stretch of the A950 being borrowed, and the right hand turn into New Deer. The road also passes through the villages of Memsie and Strichen.
Historically, aside from the shortening of the road in 1976, there are very few, if any, other changes. The A981 was upgraded from B-road status some time in the 1920s to New Deer, and fully to Inverurie by 1932.
