HUMORESQUE n.4 "Poeme Sentimental"
A heart-tugging little piece in simple A-B-A format.
A Theme (0:05-1:06). Piece opens with a minute long run of the left-hand that contains all the melodic material for the A theme. This little nugget I developed a few months ago with no real aim. Playing around with it over the last couple months I developed the A2 & A3 variations. The harmonic conceit of this part is the oscillation between the minor key and an inversion of the minor key one scale up. It opens with C# minor, which goes into G# minor with B as the root - almost tricking us into thinking its B major. Then F# minor (0:26) moves back into C# minor but with E as the root. Again, alluding to Emajor. This gives this sort of nostalgic, pensive quality. The third part (0:46) stays in the F# minor/C# minor harmony but adds the 6th (relative to F# minor) and the 2nd (relative to C# minor). Adding an extra layer of yearning. This third part is almost the most cheerful to me of the three... if we can call it that.
A2 (1:06-1:42) keeps the melodic elements of A but changes the rhythm and the harmony. It sounds less dreary, the syncopated staccato voicing of the melody promising hope through the longing. The Harmony walks up the scale - C#, E, F natural, F#, ending on B, finally turning sadness to joy.
B theme (1:42-2:07). A super fun riff to play! Harmonically extremely simple going between E major and B major. Its all in the melody and rhythm here. The syncopation takes center stage adding this gentle swing-like groove while the melody is sweet and singable. At (1:51) and (1:59) B theme gets slightly developed and restated, adding accidentals and additional notes. ("Too many notes!" as Salieri would say)
B2 Theme (2:07-2:30). Restates B theme but in a more lyrical fashion. The Harmony also borrows from A theme, going into F# minor and C# minor (2:16). Also the part I messed up the most recording this...
B3 Theme (2:30-2:38). Really just the announcement of B4 - they are both extremely similar - the dotted pattern conjuring a 'skip in their step' image to how this part feels. B4 (2:38-2:52) is where we are at our most joyful, gleeful - like a naive sort of happiness. The climax happens at (2:46). Whereafter, the happiness is quickly crushed...
A3 Theme (2:52-end). A theme returns with a sorrowful right hand. The left-hand pattern is almost identical to A theme, but shares the melodic line to its counterpart. We have the same harmonic oscillation, and an expansion of the melody. We end the piece quickly, quietly, almost unceremoniously. Like fading ripples over water.
