In Korea, after dating 2 or 3 times with someone, you have to decide whether he or she will become your boyfriend or girlfriend officially. Wow! Surprised? Yes, you have to decide very quickly. I think there are many foreigners who might be surprised at this. Do you think this quick decision in dating is different from your culture? Korean people tend to get to know each other more after they become a couple, while they are dating.

Also, people say ‘사랑해’ which means ‘I love you’ very very very quickly. Sometimes couples say this after just one date. This is very surprising, right? After one day? Wow. But please be aware that ‘사랑해’ is not that serious saying as ‘I love you’. Korean people say ‘사랑해’ very often, we use ‘사랑해’ to our family, friends, pets or even things like bag and shoes! If you adore or affectionate someone or something you use ‘사랑해’.

The second thing to talk about is the culture of texting!
When you date a Korean person, you have to pay a lot of attention to texting. Of course not every Korean is like that. I’m not like that I hate texting. I’m talking about most of the people, so don’t get me wrong!
In general, Korean people prefer to keep messaging each other CONSTANTLY. Even if you are at work or studying, whatever. So, when you’ve got a new message from your Korean boyfriend or girlfriend, I recommend you to reply immediately. If you don’t want to be in trouble. haha. I’m joking. This part is very different from other countries' cultures. In other countries, it’s okay to send just 2 or 3 messages a day to your boyfriend or girlfriend. But if Korean people receive only 2 or 3 messages a day from their significant others, they probably think that their partners don’t care, or even don’t love them anymore.
Also Korean couples take a lot of pictures of each other and send them frequently. For example, a picture of going home by taking the subway, or a picture taken at a cafe with friends. I think taking and sharing pictures is reassuring each other’s affection.

Okay, let’s talk about keeping track of anniversaries!
Anniversary is important in any culture, but Koreans celebrate a lot of anniversaries. In other countries, people generally celebrate anniversary every year, like one year or two years anniversary. However Korean people celebrate anniversary with the concept of days. For example, 1 month, 50 days, 100 days or even 200 days!
There are a lot of anniversaries to celebrate, couples usually give and receive small presents to each other or sometimes go to a fancy restaurant or so. If you forget the anniversary, be careful, you’ll probably get in BIG trouble! haha.
I think it is kind of a sweet thing, because its meaning is to celebrate your relationship. If you are dating Korean people, I recommend you to download the D-Day application on your phone! It automatically tells you the 100, 200, 365-day anniversary!

Now, the next step is the matching items! When you become a couple in Korea, you should know this part! Koreans love to have matching items with their partners! You may have heard of “couple ring”, it is a set of matching rings for a couple. Also there are couple t-shirts, couple-sneakers or sometimes couple-cellphones! Isn’t it cute? It’s like letting everyone know we are a couple and have matching items! Haha.
If you are dating Korean boyfriend or girlfriend now, it would be a great idea to present a matching item to your partner on your 100-day anniversary.
Also, in Korea “lovestargram”, a combination of love and Instagram, is a huge trend. If you are a couple in Korea, you might have to wear a couple’s matching T-shirt and post on instagram with a hashtag, lovestagram.

The last thing to talk about is hanging out or contacting with male or female friends! This is a very controversial topic even in Korea. Let’s say you are a man and you have a Korean girlfriend. Your girlfriend may not be happy if you hang out with a female friend. Probably it's okay when you hang out together as a group in the company of other friends. But she may not understand if you go out with your female friend alone and watch a movie or go to a cafe. I’m not talking that Korean women get jealous easily, Korean men also get jealous and not happy when their girlfriends hang out with a male friend.
