It was a perfect winter day for coastal walk with the sun shining gloriously and no wonder the turnout was full house. We parked our car at the end of Beachcomber Avenue to start the walk.
The highlights of the walk for us were definitely the Balconies, the Wedding Cake Rock and Marley Head. We stopped at these 3 places to take in the spectacular sweeping ocean views and for short breaks.
Our first stop was the Balconies offering sweeping stunning ocean view. As it’s the season for whale’s migration, we were trying to spot them. However we couldn’t find any in the vast Pacific Ocean. We then proceeded to our next stop which is the Wedding Cake Rock.
The Wedding Cake Rock is now fenced for safety purpose. It has a 90° angle cut and stands 25 m above the deep blue ocean. Looking at it close-up, it does resembles a square silky pure white layered wedding cake. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service website mentions that the white colour of the Wedding Cake Rock is caused by iron leaching. As a result, makes the sandstone layers dangerously soft, prone to cracking and at very high risk of collapse at anytime.
After stopping at the Wedding Cake Rock, we then continued our walk to Marley Head. On our way, we descended into the Water-run which is a natural stream outflow into the ocean. We walked along the rocks to the edge and spent a few minutes watching and listening to the strong and powerful waves crashing against the cliffs and rocks. What a feeling!
As we continued along the track, we also get to view many marvellous and beautiful formation and colour of rocks and sandstones.
After a short walk, we finally arrived at Marley Head. Here, we were able to look out to the Little Marley Beach as well as the Marley Beach. Standing on the top of one of the rocks, watching the beauty of the ocean and the waves foaming and crashing against the jagged cliffs, it took my breath away.
It was a wonderful day out enjoying the beauty of nature with the other 14 of our avid hiker friends. Many thanks to Captain Frank for taking us to this spectacular coastal walk.
