Okay, today we're gonna do something a little touristy. We're going to visit the East Side Gallery in Berlin. Even though it might be one of those tourist traps, I think it's actually a must-see for any visitor in the area. This open-air gallery, located between the Warschauer Strasse and Ostbahnhof stations, stretches 1.3 kilometers and is the largest outdoor mural in the world.
Welcome to the East Side Gallery, the last stretch of the Berlin Wall that is still standing. There are a few little bits scattered here and there, but I'm giving you a walking tour of this wall and sharing a bit of history about it. The East Side Gallery is a preserved section of the Berlin Wall transformed into a vibrant canvas by artists from around the globe. I spent almost 10 years performing here every day, so I know this wall like the back of my hand and everything about it.
There are over 100 different artists who have painted murals along this wall—118 to be exact, from 21 different countries. Most of these murals represent peace in their own unique way. A lot of them were originally painted in 1990 and were later repainted in 2000 and 2009. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, artists seized the opportunity to turn this symbol of division into one of unity and freedom. Today, it stands as a powerful reminder of Berlin's turbulent past and its journey towards reunification.
As you stroll through this iconic gallery, you'll encounter several notable artworks. Most famously, "The Kiss" by Dmitri Vrubel, depicting the fraternal embrace between Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev and East German leader Erich Honecker. While the East Side Gallery is a beautiful and historic walk, it's essential to stay aware of your surroundings. Scammers, including individuals posing as Roma Gypsies collecting money for fake charities, are often seen in the area. However, this shouldn't deter you from enjoying the experience. The gallery is a pleasant 30 to 45-minute walk, offering a unique blend of history, art, and culture, and it's free. Adding to the lively atmosphere, you'll find numerous street performers showcasing their talents along the way. I was one of them for many years. From musicians to dancers, these performers bring an extra layer of vibrancy to the gallery, making your visit even more memorable.
So take your time, sit by the river, soak in the art, and immerse yourself in a piece of history that continues to inspire millions of visitors each year. Thanks for watching! Hit that like and subscribe button and keep on adventuring.
