The MiniScribe 8051 is a drive that is well known for being one of the very few MiniScribe design that Maxtor continued to make under their brand (the 7040/7080 that Maxtor expended upon being the other one).
A thing that is less known, is that an SCSI version of that drive exists. And this one being dated 1988, seems like it might have come out before IDE really became a thing.
This drive has the most unusual design for a rotary voice coil:
The coil is stationary, and the magnets are attached to the arm and thus move with it. As far as I know, the 8051 is the only drive doing it that way.
This exemple of the drive is in good health. One sector shows up as bad in speedsys or during a SCSI verify, but Scandisk passes with no issue so...
