Описание: Gli scavi archeologici di Ercolano hanno restituito i resti dell'antica città di Ercolano, seppellita sotto una coltre di ceneri, lapilli e fango durante l'eruzione del Vesuvio del 79, insieme a Pompei, Stabia e Oplonti. Dopo un primo ritrovamento casuale a seguito degli scavi per la realizzazione di un pozzo nel 1709, le indagini archeologiche a Ercolano cominciarono nel 1738 per protrarsi fino al 1765; riprese nel 1823, si interruppero nuovamente nel 1875, fino a uno scavo sistematico promosso da Amedeo Maiuri a partire dal 1927.

The archaeological excavations of Ercolano have returned the remains of the ancient city of Ercolano, buried under a blanket of ashes, lapilli and mud during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79, together with Pompeii, Stabiae and Oplontis. After an initial casual discovery following excavations for the construction of a well in 1709, archaeological investigations in Herculaneum began in 1738 and continued until 1765; resumed in 1823, were interrupted again in 1875, until a systematic excavation promoted by Amedeo Maiuri starting in 1927.
