Mrs. Chamali lives in a beautiful village near Deniaya, in the Beralapanathara area of the Matara district. At first, she didn’t do any job. Simply put, as a mother of three, she devoted herself to being a housewife.

Is it difficult for a woman to take up agriculture as a self-employment venture? Countless times she felt that way. Yet finally, she decided to face the challenge and began a new journey as a female agri-entrepreneur.

In this new venture, Mrs. Chamali chose poly tunnel cultivation. The Southern Provincial Department of Agriculture played a special role in providing her with the necessary knowledge and technology. Chamali started her poly tunnel farm on 1,000 square feet, and today it has expanded to over 4,000 square feet. She has even incorporated automated technologies into all these poly tunnels.

She cultivates crops like bell pepper, salad cucumber, hot chili, and nai chili (a local variety) under protected house cultivation. While managing all this, she realized that adding livestock could further increase her income. So, she also started managing layer chickens for egg production.

Using a coconut slicing machine, she cuts coconut flakes herself and makes coconut chips, which she then uses as part of the growing media for her crops—and sells the surplus, too.
