Chocolate Swirl Banana Bread with Date Paste & Walnuts
Ingredients
Wet ingredients
2 ripe bananas, mashed (~1 cup)
5 tbsp date paste (~⅓ cup)
3 tbsp melted coconut oil or butter
1 large egg
½ tsp vanilla extract
Dry ingredients
10 tbsp whole wheat flour (~⅔ cup)
5 tbsp ragi flour (~⅓ cup)
5 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
¾ tsp baking soda
¼ tsp baking powder
⅛ tsp salt
Chocolate swirl
3 tbsp dark chocolate, chopped or chips
1 tsp coconut oil or butter
Add-ins
¼ cup chopped walnuts (~4 tbsp)
Instructions
1. Preheat & Prepare
Preheat oven to 175°C / 350°F.
Grease a small loaf pan (about 7×3 inch) or line it with parchment paper.
2. Make the Wet Mixture
Mash the bananas until smooth.
Add date paste, melted coconut oil/butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
Mix well until everything is smooth.
3. Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a separate bowl whisk together:
Whole wheat flour
Ragi flour
Cocoa powder
Baking soda
Baking powder
Salt
4. Combine Wet & Dry
Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients.
Mix gently until just combined.
Do not overmix to keep the bread soft.
5. Add Walnuts
Fold in the chopped walnuts evenly into the batter.
6. Prepare the Chocolate Swirl
Melt 3 tbsp dark chocolate + 1 tsp coconut oil using a microwave or double boiler.
Let it cool slightly.
7. Swirl the Chocolate
Pour batter into the loaf pan.
Drizzle the melted chocolate on top.
Use a knife or skewer to create gentle swirls.
8. Bake
Bake for 40–50 minutes.
Check with a toothpick; it should come out mostly clean (a little melted chocolate is fine).
If the top browns too fast, cover loosely with foil after 30–35 minutes.
9. Cool & Serve
Cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes.
Transfer to a wire rack and cool completely before slicing.
✅ Result:
A rich chocolate banana bread with nutty walnuts and gooey chocolate swirls, naturally sweetened with date paste.
