Imagine hanging out of a helicopter at 100 feet with nothing but air between you and the enemy below. No armor. No protection. Just you, a machine gun, and 2,000 rounds between your legs. This was the terrifying reality for Vietnam War door gunners.
Their life expectancy in combat was measured in minutes. They sat in open doorways of thin-skinned Hueys, firing at targets while bullets ripped through the helicopter around them. Almost half of all helicopters in Vietnam crashed. The enemy knew shooting the door gunners first would make the aircraft vulnerable, so they became prime targets.
From hot landing zones under heavy fire to medical evacuations directly into combat, these young men faced impossible decisions in split seconds. Some continued fighting even after being mortally wounded. Over 2,700 door gunners died doing one of the most exposed and dangerous jobs in military history.
This is their story. Their sacrifice led to the development of modern attack helicopters, but it came too late for thousands of brave men.
