How to Install Schluter Ditra, Avoid Cracked Tiles, Grout

How to install Schluter Ditra over wood subfloors or concrete slabs

When most tile installers build a schluter shower they think of Schluter Kerdi Membrane and Schluter Kerdi band for waterproofing. But what about outisde the wet area of the shower floor? What about upper floors in house that are commonly made of plywood subflooring? These plywood subfloor planks and panels of OSB plywood sub floors often have a lot of flex to them. This leads to cracked tile and cracked grout lines. Even if you are installing a tile floor over concrete, you can still have movement in the concrete enough to crack your tile floor. You could have floor cracks all over your tile floor. You can install Schluter DITRA over osb subfloor panels as well.

Schluter Ditra uncoupling membrane installation over plywood or concrete

This is where using the Schluter Ditra over concrete or learning how to install schluter ditra over wood sub floors can help reduce your chances of getting cracked toils. You'll avoid grout line cracks also. We show you in this video how to install schluter ditra over plywood or concrete floor, it's the same process for embedding the DITRA over plywood into the thin set mortar. In the case of this video, we installed schluter ditra on concrete slab. These were prefabbed slab segments that made up the second floor subfloor. this was much better quality than building wood subfloors.

How to install ditra

If you use schluter ditra on plywood, you must make sure the floor joists beneath your sub floor are not farther than 16" on center. If the floor joists are spaced any wider, like say 20", you'll have to sister up the floor joists by screwing additional floor joists segments onto the existing wood floor joists, until the wood floor joist spacing is now at 16". This minimizes the flexing of the wood sub floors, and will make your tile floor installation conform to the TCNA (Tile Council of North America) specs for tiling over wood sub flooring. Now you know how to install ditra, it's not hard at all.
