A violent confrontation broke out at Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region on November 1, 2025, when hundreds of angry youth attacked a NAIMOS (National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat) taskforce vehicle. The military-led team had earlier arrested two suspected illegal miners and seized vehicles, weapons, and mining equipment during a raid near Bronikrom.
After news of the arrests spread, about 600 residents stormed the Hwidiem Police Station, demanding the release of the seized items and the soldiers’ detention. The mob vandalized a NAIMOS pickup truck, and a blackout in the town worsened tensions. Local chiefs and police eventually intervened to calm the situation and safely escort the task force out of town.
No injuries were reported, but the incident underscored rising tensions between anti-galamsey operations and local communities who feel targeted or excluded from enforcement actions.
