I mentioned in my last video of Closer to the Heart that I left out the crotale introduction and I realized that many I know are probably curious about what Crotales are and what they sound like. So I decided to record the short into to the song with the crotales.
They are very similar in sound to orchestra bells (glockenspiel), which is why Neil can substitute them here, when in the original and many live versions he uses bells). However, instead of long, thin bars made of steel, as bells are, they are round and made from cymbal bronze alloy (typically 80% copper and 20% tin). This gives them a different quality of sound. It's less pure, with more complex overtones and a sort of shimmery sound as a result.
There are two octaves of them and they are set up with sharps and flats like the white and black keys of a piano (or any other keyboard percussion instrument). For those looking at this set and wondering why it looks funny, I mostly only needed the lower octave for this part, but needed two notes from the other octave. So instead of setting up the whole upper octave, I replaced the top C-natural with the D natural, and then added the C# on a separate, individual stand. So those two notes on the far left (as you see in the video) are not what they should be. :)
If you want to hear the whole song with drums, check out my previous video:

Also of note is my new Rush shirt that Molly gave me. It's one that Neil had designed for one of their later tours for him to wear during concerts. They are really nice shirts! (Available on the Rush Backstage website.)
