Within the buffer zone, the hangars and runways of the Nicosia International Airport remain much as they were since 1974.
In 1968, an initial expansion of the airport saw its runways serving both military and civilian aircrafts and by 1974, the airport was welcoming tourists from across the world and was fast becoming a popular meeting place for locals. German-designed by Dorsch und Gehrmann and Cypriot-built, the airport was hailed for the stylish modernity of its design.
Now, time and weather have led to some structural deterioration of the terminal building, and the airport remains inside the United Nations Protected Area, within the buffer zone, on the western edge of the capital of the island.
