A live steam model of the Ballaarat, A Western Australia timber loco.
This loco was designed and built during lock-down, taking 9 months from first casting to first steaming.
Other than a lathe and some HSS cutting tools, this loco can be built in a very modest workshop. Even the name plates are etched using a toner printer, copper sulfate and an old cell phone charger.
The scale hauling loads and speeds in the video are roughly 1ton and 160kph respectively, not bad for a 150 year old design. The little loco can haul heaver loads much faster, but we have necessary speed restrictions on our little track!
