Mayfair is a well known name in the world of vintage audio. In the 1960's millions of Mayfair brand tape recorders – rim-drive and capstan drive reel to reel recorders of sizes ranging from 3-inch to 7 -inch reel capacity – as well as compact cassette tape recorders flooded the U.S. consumer tape recorder market at very reasonable prices. One unit, the Mayfair 1602 rim drive R2R tape recorder won an industrial design award at MOMA (The Museum of Modern Art) in New York City in the late 1960's! So, Mayfair got around.
(NOTE: YOU can explore this tape recorder in ClydeSight Channel here on YouTube at: • Magical Tape Recorder -- Mayfair 1602 MOMA... )
This Mayfair reel to reel tape recorder is one of a few 5-inch R2R designs sold under the brand name. It is what I call the “suitcase” style model. Other styles that used the same battery configuration and functions were housed in brown stitched leather cases. These models featured capstan drive instead of the rim drive often associated with the Mayfair brand.
This video explores a completely dysfunctional machine that arrived DOA (this was expected) from E-Bay. BOTH the amplifier and mechanical drive system were inoperative. The amplifier (which is actually pretty good) needed replacement electrolytic capacitors, but the mechanical drive was not so simple to repair because of a catastrophic (almost) motor failure)
In addition this little tape recorder had a secret to reveal that was hiding in plain sight. As you watch the video, can you detect the secret?
All will be revealed at the end!
Enjoy!
