Operation Torch was the code name for the Allied invasion of North Africa during World War II. It took place on November 8, 1942, and marked the first major American offensive against Axis forces (Germany and Italy) in the European theater.
The operation aimed to gain control of French North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia), which was then under the rule of Vichy France, an ally of Germany. Allied forces—mainly American and British troops—landed simultaneously at Casablanca, Oran, and Algiers.
After several days of fighting against Vichy forces, a ceasefire was reached, and the Allies took control of the region. This success allowed them to prepare for the invasion of Tunisia, where Axis forces were still present, and to open a new front in southern Europe.
Operation Torch was a major strategic turning point: it strengthened Allied cooperation, weakened German influence in Africa, and paved the way for the invasion of Italy in 1943.
