Welcome back to the workbench where we try to make things — and today we’re continuing work on the 1971 Oldsmobile Faux 42 model build.
In this episode, the focus is almost entirely on the paintwork, as I work toward locking in the final look before everything can be permanently assembled. This build represents what my Cutlass might have looked like when I was 22 — garage-painted, not perfect, but full of character.
The base coat is intentionally uneven, and the goal here is a weathered, flaking clear coat rather than rust or heavy damage. I want it to feel like cheap clear, sun exposure, and time have all taken their toll — without turning it into a full-on junker.
🧰 In This Episode
🎨 Evaluating the base coat and uneven garage-paint look
🧽 Wet sanding to knock down sheen and prep the surface
🧴 Using the hairspray technique to simulate peeling clear coat
☀️ Focusing wear on sun-exposed areas (roof, hood, trunk, quarters)
🧐 Reviewing what worked — and what may need another pass
🧪 Debating another round vs stopping before it gets overdone
🧩 Planning ahead for final body, interior, and chassis assembly
🧠 Workbench Wisdom
Sometimes the hardest part of weathering isn’t how to do it — it’s knowing when to stop.
🔧 What’s Coming Next
Once the paint is finalized, it’ll be time to:
Permanently assemble the body, interior, and chassis
Finish connecting loose hoses and wiring
Install remaining exterior details
Start seeing this thing come together as a complete car
I’m also getting back into posting YouTube Shorts to show close-up details that don’t always come through in full-length videos, so check the Shorts tab for tighter looks at the build.
Let me know what you think of the paint direction in the comments — I really do read them.
