The Black Death was a plague pandemic that spread across Europe and the middle east during the middle ages. Caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis, it was spread by fleas who jumped from rats to humans and spreading the bacteria by biting its host. In bubonic plague, the bacteria spread via the lymphatic system- causing lymph nodes to swell into painful buboes. Pneumonic plague occurs when the bacteria infest the victim's lungs, while in septicaemic plague spreads in the victim's bloodstream.
As the body's immune system tries to fight the plague bacteria, the victim suffers fevers
and chills. Diarrhoea and vomiting occur as the body tries to expel the infection from the body. As the bacteria overwhelm the body, the victim's blood pressure drops and their organ's fail due to being starved of oxygen. Death comes in less than a week.
