Integrated Pest Management and Sustainability
Farmers worldwide are challenged with rapidly growing populations and demand for more food. To address this urgent situation, they must be equipped with knowledge and tools to sustainably maximize crop production with minimal environmental impact.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) allows farmers to manage diseases, insects, weeds and other pests in a sustainable and environmentally sound way.
IPM focuses on three main areas: prevention, monitoring and intervention. Prevention includes a range of practical strategies that suit local conditions. Monitoring involves scouting for pests (insects, diseases and weeds) to determine if, when and how intervention should occur. Intervention involves physical, biological and chemical methods to maximize the yield and value of crops while minimizing effects on the environment.
With IPM, farmers can sustainably grow the amount of food
needed for our global population for decades to come.
