It's been a while. As I am staying overseas for the first half of the year and hence, there will be no piano playing videos during the period.
Apart from Ghost, Stellar Stellar is my 2nd most favourite song of her yearly released originals. Not only because of her brilliant vocal, but also the arrangement is full of subtle details (like 2 different snare sounds in the chorus, the chaotic yet rhythmic drum and fast arpeggios played by keys) just for one chief impression -- sparking stellar above the sky. In piano, my approach is to fill as much as arpeggios as I can in places as the original did to bring the feeling (and try to be as close as the original). That brings to the fact that most of the difficult sections lie on the non-vocal sections (like the intro and instrumental solo)
The arrangement can be broken down into five major sections: Intro, verse, pre-chorus, chorus and instrumental solo.
In the intro which only Suisei voices are present, I transcribed the harmony vocals hung by Suisei also as they formed part of the riser towards the real intro. It is interesting to note that the beginning of the real intro is on the third beat instead of the first beat of the bar, which is something uncommon. There are other fancy beat designs in the pre-chorus. The first arpeggio is for filling the gap while the second one is part of the song.
Arrangement in verse are simpler in the verse. The staccato left hand is from the plucks in the original. As the emotion is stacking up, broken chord in left hand is placed. Variations of left-hand rhythm are arranged in the repeat because of the change in drum patterns and the tone colour (from plucks to edge of the snare).
Here comes the difficult section -- the pre-chours. In the original song, the pre-chorus is where the listeners will find the "sparking" feeling due to the variations of snare rolls, the piano running, the back-up vocals and the trumpets (the tone of trumpets are very good at transmitting the grand and energetic feeling to the audience). Hence, 4-th note chords are placed at the left hand for bringing the beat of the kick drum, and the right-to-left hand arpeggios acts as the third voice apart from the beat (left hand) and the melody (right hand). One noteworthy thing is the unusual rhythm. Not until I transcribed this section, I thought the melodies in bar 59 to bar 62 are dotted 8-th notes (same in the second-half of the chorus, bar 82 to 88). Yet actually they are triplets, which makes the song more attractive to the listeners. Also, the melody marked the end of the apreggios are placed a weak beat (bar 63) instead of a strong beat. This "sight" lay-back adds another interesting detail to the song.
Chorus is the part to be kept in simple as the major elements are the drum and the melody. Variations of the drums rhythm in the repeat of the first half of the chorus are arranged. The second half of the chorus looks daunting yet with adequate understanding of arpeggios it can be played effortlessly. More arpeggios are placed to further add the sparking feeling, Placing the melody of the phrase "だって僕は星だから" an octave higher works unexpectedly well to bring much emotion, and followed by a scale to connect the calm break.
The instrumental solo is the most difficult section. Here I want to give a huge shoutout to YT channel "Ivan Lee" for his transcription of the keys solo part ( • Stellar Stellar - Hoshimachi Suisei (Bridg... ) that I integrated. I figured out a fingering yet I'm struggling at practicing that to play at a decent tempo. I hope I can practice well to play that in the near future.
The outro reuses element from the intro and add variations to it. Here I borrow the arpeggio in the chorus to add more notes to maintain the sparking feeling and add more familiarity. I also transcribed the backup vocals by suisei at the very end of the song as they brings good harmony to the octave tremolos. In fact, octave tremolos are used to mimics the drum rolls before the pre-chorus, as well as the finale to represent the snare and ride roll.
There are sooooo many details in the original that I only captured a few. I tried my very best to make this transcription as close as the original while maintaining at a level that I can play with. This is the most delighting transcription I have done and I hope you will enjoy it as I do.
