I'm Anthony Weaver with the Lead Paint Detectives and you may remember these plates from a video I produced in 2019 about lead in China tableware. Back then, I tried the unreliable and not manufactured anymore, 3M LeadCheck sticks to check for lead in these plates. I was unsatisfied because I found no lead, and yet I still think there’s lead in these plates.

Now there’s a way to test your old China tableware and all your dishes for lead.

To test and see if the glaze is broken on my Mom’s old China plates, I’ll be using Lumetallix, the instant lead detection test.

I want to cover the whole surface of the dishes so I chose to use the Lumetallix spray. I turned off the lights because you can see the glowing green best in low-light conditions.

Use the UV flashlight and see if the design glows green.

On the white China dish, you can see specs of lead on the plate. On the pink plate, we have obvious signs of lead in the flower pattern.

The result shows my Mom’s old china plates have lead in them and the glaze has broken. Now, it’s important to remember if the glaze is still sealed and intact… like you never used it before, there may not be any signs of lead. If the glaze is broken there’s no doubt lead will leach lead into your foods and liquids from your tableware and pitchers into your mouth and into your digestive system.

Over time, with usage, the ceramic glaze breaks down exposing the lead to the surface. This is a clear and imminent danger.

Never microwave your leaded plate. Never run a leaded plate in an automatic dishwasher, and never store food on a leaded plate or acidic liquids in a leaded container.

Limiting the use of old china to holidays and special occasions seems like a decent idea. However, children should never eat from leaded plates. And adults? Is it really worth risking lead poisoning?

Display your old leaded China, don’t eat off it. Don’t give it away and if you hand it down to somebody else? Let them know it’s for display only because there’s lead in the plate.
