New South Wales Police have been given extra powers as Israeli President Isaac Herzog arrives in Sydney to begin his official visit to Australia following the Bondi Beach terror attack.
Under the "major event" declaration, police will have more powers to "close off" access to a major event area and "directing people to leave", Tourism Minister Stephen Kamper said.
Protesters are due to gather at Sydney's Town Hall this evening but Assistant Police Commissioner Peter McKenna told ABC News Breakfast police would prefer the group go to the more spacious Hyde Park.
More than 3,000 NSW Police officers will be deployed throughout Mr Herzog's visit, including 500 for the planned demonstration tonight.
