We’re at the end of this autumn’s brilliant planting season putting some Milling Wheat blend into a legume fallow (2 year cropping break) from cereal production. The grass and legumes (clover, Lucerne, sainfoin) was planted in the summer of 2023 and has produced flowers and seeds for insects and birds for 2 years whilst helping to build soil structure and fertility and reduce potential erosion. This has been funded through our Higher Tier Stewardship scheme which ends in December 2025 and with no alternative in place these environmentally beneficial options will cease across much of the UK.
The soil structure is lovely and the seeds are being planted to a good depth into some moisture and with warm temperatures will hopefully emerge in about 10 days.
