Welcome back to Part 3 of my travel series, Across the Middle Kingdom! 🇨🇳
After exploring the deep history of Nanjing, I hopped on another high-speed bullet train to one of China’s most poetic cities.
Suzhou, often called “The Venice of the East.” Known for its tranquil canals, stone bridges, and world-famous classical gardens, this city offered a much slower and more peaceful rhythm compared to the busy metropolises I had visited before.
🗓️ Day 1 – From Nanjing to Suzhou: The Venice of the East
My day started early in Nanjing South Railway Station, catching a bullet train to Suzhou, the ride only took about one hour but transported me into a completely different atmosphere. Upon arrival, I transferred to another local train that took me closer to my hotel. After checking in and settling down, it was time to explore what Suzhou had to offer!
My first stop was Gusu District, the cultural heart of the city. The area is full of narrow alleyways, traditional houses, and red lanterns hanging from centuries-old walls. I stopped for a quick snack and early dinner, tasting Suzhou’s delicate local cuisine before moving on to one of the city’s most beautiful attractions, Shantang Street.
As night fell, the district came alive with warm lantern lights reflecting off the canals. I took a 30-minute Seven-Mile Shantang River boat ride, a must-do experience that perfectly captures the soul of Suzhou. Gliding under arched bridges and past ancient riverside homes, the calm waters and poetic scenery made it one of the most peaceful evenings of my trip. 🌙🚤
🗓️ Day 2 – Museums, Gardens, and Farewell to Suzhou
The next morning, I woke up early to make the most of my second and final day in Suzhou. My first stop was the Suzhou Museum, an architectural masterpiece designed by I.M. Pei, blending modern simplicity with traditional Chinese elegance. Unfortunately, the Humble Administrator’s Garden was fully booked that day, but I still managed to visit its outer areas and nearby gardens — soaking in the serene ponds, pavilions, and lush greenery that make Suzhou famous worldwide. 🌿🏯
After exploring, I had lunch at a nearby restaurant before heading back to my hotel for check-out. My time in Suzhou was short, but it left a lasting impression , a perfect balance of history, water-town charm, and gentle tranquility.
With my bags packed, I made my way back to Suzhou Railway Station, ready for the next chapter of my Chinese journey, Shanghai, my final destination! 🚄🌆
